One of the Montessori basics is the set of Geometric Solids. Like all the Montessori equipment, there are tons of ways to use them. One activity matches the 3D solids to the corresponding 2D shape.
Here's our version:
A former neighbor gave me a lovely hand-me-down set of natural wooden shapes so at least we have shapes like a cone, pyramid, sphere, half sphere, different prisms, etc.
The best part of this activity? While Kiddo sifted through his block bucket (that's right, I didn't even take the proper blocks out for him and put them on a little tray, Montessori style) for the appropriate shapes I got to eat my favorite snack: avocado and pretzels. He also spent a lot of time arranging the blocks, esp. the rectangles and squares!

A Bit of This and A Bit of That
hahaha! I'm right there with you. It can be pricey and I'm certainly not completely devoted to it, but I do use some of their activities and principles.
ReplyDeleteI love your style and this activity looks pretty good fun!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this post. I've tried some Montessori activities too, but I'm definetly in the "white trash" area too! I always think that Montessori purists would die if they saw how I did activities with Paige! I actually really like this one - I think I might need to try it. :) Plus, I'm always looking for activities that give me time to have a snack. LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm there with you. I make most of my material too. In fact I just made the metal inserts..but not out of metal but foam board. I don't think you need to buy most of the stuff. With a little creativity almost everything can be made.
