Island Getaway (Bits of My Weekend)

This weekend we decided to get out to Govenor's Island. The city has been developing the island as a recreation destination for the past few years and future plans sound really interesting. The Brooklyn ferry departure point is at Pier 6, where there is a new, much-hyped playground "complex."  Truthfully, I thought there were some serious flaws to the playground. However, as you can see...
New Kid loved the water area.
 Kiddo loved the Tarzan swing.

After our picnic on the island, we enjoyed....
Ice cream from the Blue Marble Ice Cream Tricycle (our weekends usually involve ice cream).
Swings with a view.
A crazy mini-golf course.
Each hole is designed by a different artist.
You try getting a hole in one!
Back to the ferry for home.

  1. Loved seeing all the photos from the mini golf course. Was the golf course close to the ferry drop-off point?

We love Blue Marble too- glad to know it's on Governors Island. It's supposed to open soon on Pier 1.

  2. The golf course is in the middle of the island on Liggett Terrace. It's run by Figment. You can see photos of all the 2010 holes and more about the artists and the ideas behind the individual designs here: http://figmentproject.org/2010/long-term-exhibitions/figment-minigolf/

  3. I can see one significant drawback - no shade. I am sure that icecream was really needed. However, the golf place looks really nice, and the view is terrific.
