Friday Do-Over: Ramp it Up!

First published 9/7/08

Cheap and easy entertainment: prop a cookie sheet on a stack of books for an impromptu ramp. Bonus: this is a good way to get some value out of those self-help books you checked out of the library but never read.

First the blocks.
Then the cars. I like this photo, even though it is a little blurry because our cat looks a bit windswept with his ears back.

Goodby to a Sweet Friend

A week ago we lost our lovely cat to cancer. Harvey was so tolerant of the all the kids' pokes, prods and pats. He was so soft and cuddly. We will miss him.

Friday Do-Over: Magnets

Excellent activity for free play, but remember magnets can be unsafe for very little ones.
First Published 11/11/08

Here is a good distraction activity which I stole/borrowed from a number of sources including Wildwood Cottage blog and the book Do-It-Yourself Early Learning. Magnets! The first order of business was to go on an excursion to the hardware store and while I was looking for a magnet like the one this cutie played had instead I found a pair of super strength ceramic magnets and a super-fun telescoping magnet wand!

I gave Kiddo an assortment of metal hardware with which to experiment and he had a ball. The super strength magnets sure gave his fingers a workout.

He also discovered that if he put the hook on the end of the wand he could use it to "fish" for a variety of objects!
We use the inside of our front door (which is steel) in lieu of the fridge for magnets and as a chalkboard (with the help of some blackboard paint) so I can store this activity in a bag where Kiddo can easily retrieve it whenever he wants.

DIY Bath Toys

Remember the plastic bottle caps I can't throw away? They also make great bath toys. And they don't hold a lot of water so when New Kid hurls them around they don't create quite the mess...

Space Pod Reader

It is fair to say that Kiddo does not enjoy New Kid's company. He prefers to escape to his "special reading chair." Most days he spends at least an hour in there.
Blast Off.

Currently his favorite reads are series chapter books. He especially enjoys:
Magic Tree House (and their Research Guides)
Horrible Harry
Nate the Great
Captain Underpants
If your kids are reading "bridge level" chapter books, what are their favorites?

Weekend Bonus Post for Recipe Hounds

I don't have much of the latest technology: no iphone, no ipod, no dvr, no cable, my laptop is a 5 year old hand-me-down. I don't even have a microwave. But man, I really, really, really want this.
And this is why:See the culprit in the corner?

Friday Do-Over: Snow Muffins

In honor of Wednesday's snow day, here is a repost from last year's snow storm. First Published 3/3/09

A snowstorm passed over us dropping 10 (!) inches of snow on Monday. Kiddo was very disappointed that his mom would not brave gusty winds and a temps in the low 20s with a baby in order to take him sledding. It would have been fun. NYC has free sleds and hot cocoa in the parks on snow days. For consolation we had an indoor snow party. Kiddo made some delicious snow muffins. I thought it was hilarious he had to put on his mittens at one point.

Hearts and Crafts

I didn't realize I already had a post scheduled for today so now you are getting 2 in one day. Lucky you.

With a few exceptions, we don't do many holiday-themed arts and crafts around here. I find the deadline of a holiday to be too much pressure! Plus, I can't get into themed stuff or projects which require a lot of parental direction. And with New Kid, I can't handle much more than throwing a few art supplies on the table and letting Kiddo loose. However, as Kiddo is really into hearts these days (I think because of school) AND we had a snow day here in the city yesterday I managed to hunt through our art boxes to find Valentine themed materials. Kiddo informed me that included anything "red, pink, purple, white, and with hearts and flowers." Well okay, then.

Then I let him loose.

DIY Tiddlywinks

I've been saving the bottle caps that we can no longer recycle. I keep thinking maybe I will be able to recycle them again one day. In the mean time, they make great tiddlywinks for Kiddo and objects to toss around for New Kid.

Sudoku Mania

A year ago Mormor got Kiddo interested in Sudoku (it involved numbers, so really, how could he NOT be interested?). This past Christmas I found a Sudoku book that he could do by himself. He LOVES it!

Games Galore

Almost all of Kiddo's Christmas presents were games. He loves games. Here is the stack of his recently acquired goods. He has made us play Scrambled States of America (based on the book with the same name -- with which he is also obsessed) 12 million times. I recently found him playing it with his cars and trucks. "What are you doing?" I asked. "Playing Scrambled States with my transportation," he responded.

Well, at least I was getting a break from playing it!

Friday Do-Over: Catapult

As the first of my Friday Do-Over (thanks to those of you who voted! And thanks for loving me!), here is an easy catapult activity to keep your little ones busy. BTW, you can see that when I first started this blog I wrote it in the third person. What was I thinking?Surprisingly, there are a number of things Mom could post about today, like science class, a new play space, or making green play dough. However, the baby catapult from her new activity book wins the day.

Mom made this catapult from some cardboard, foam core board, stiff cardboard tubing and milk bottle top. She left it out on Kiddo's table along with some tin foil balls for him to find. Well, he loved it. "This is fun!, he said over and over while Mom sneaked away.

At one point, Mom said "Bombs Away!" when he shot another ball across the room. Since Kiddo has probably not heard that expression before he started shouting what Mom thought was "Barnes and Nobles!", but was actually, "Barnes N No Balls!"

As you can see from the photo, another great use for the pom.

Magic Carrots

Our food co-op has awesome produce, including these "magic" carrots as I call them. Kiddo doesn't usually like to eat carrots, but he loved these (they taste the same as standard orange carrots).

Purple on the outside, orange on the inside. Magic.

World View

Kiddo loves maps. These atlases kept him busy (and quiet) the entire afternoon and evening one day.
New Kid loves them, too.
