I have my challenges as a parent, but getting Kiddo to read is not one of them. In fact, getting him to
stop reading in the morning in order to get dressed is more like it. It may seem counter-intuitive, then, that I decided this would be the "Summer of the Audio Book." I just wrote a post,
Benefits of Audio Books for Children over at
LIFEclectic (hint, hint), but I thought I would share some of the recordings we've been listening to.

These are all books that we've read before, but Kiddo enjoys the repetition. Truthfully, I enjoy listening to them just as much as he does. I'm on the lookout for books read by really terrific and expressive narrators and if you have any suggestions, leave me a comment so we can check them out.
Do your kids listen to audio books?

We've been listening to "The Problem with the Puddles" about a family whose last name is Puddles. It's not a BRILLIANT book, but it is quite hilarious if you picture it the way Emma does, with the Puddle family actually being a family of puddles (she has drawn them, standing up all floppily with arms and legs).
ReplyDeleteWe'll have to check out some of these!
We listen to audiobooks a lot in the car. Since kids picture books tend to only bee 7 to 15 minutes in length they've been perfect for our little drives to preschool or summer camp or out to my parents who live a half hr away. Some times I'm super disappointed in the narrator. Usually it's with a book I already know and love and think "well I could do better than that!" But I can tell you one that I can't do better than - Skippy Jon Jones. The author, Judy Schacher, reads any of them so fantastically. I could never top her.
ReplyDeleteI'm always looking out for audiobooks as we go through them quickly. My favorite is the Moongobble series. Our daughter loves all the MTH and have listened to them all. She also enjoyed Pippi Longstocking and few other but I can't remember them right now.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I love your blog! You have great ideas!
We just came back from NY (about 6 hours) and we listened to "Double Fudge" by Judy Bloome and "The Best/Worst Christmas Pageant Ever". Both fun to listen to. We also listened to portions of Mrs. Piggle Wiggles Farm for the 3 year old.
ReplyDeletehere from What my child is reading hop, we love My father's dragon too! and will be venturing into the Magic Tree House books really soon!
ReplyDeletewe don't listen to many audio books, but the ones we have he does love, I got a TS3 book on clearance with a CD a while back and he listens to it all the time, he also has a leapfrog tag that he listens to books on! I should see what the library has next time we go!
We listen to books in the car sometimes and the other day, my daughter was acting out Snow White, and I was thinking, "That's weird, we haven't ever watched Snow White" but then I remembered we listen to Snow White in the car sometimes (its a version I got from the Dollar Tree, not the Disney version). We read Fantastic Mr. Fox here recently, and my daughter loved it!

We love audio books! I agree with Joyful Learner that the MTH series on audio is great. I wrote a post last week about what we've been listening to lately:

We love audio books as well, and I am going to bookmark your post for suggestions. Currently we were attempting to listen to Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary, but Anna got all upset by Ralph not following the rules, so we are taking a break from it. We also tried Geronimo Stilton, but neither of us could really get into these books. MTH is on hold since we got into Merlin Missions - Anna hates supernatural with a passion. I might skip a few to return to something she can digest. Thanks for joining WMCIR!
ReplyDeleteWe like anything read by Jim Weiss. Our homeschool (classical) co-op is using Story of the World - and it's fantastic. This year's time frame is early modern. I'd love to loan them to you if you would like to try before buying - but I'm sure your library has them, too. Search Amazon for all Jim has done - maybe a niche for your guy(s).
ReplyDeleteHave you read/listened to the Narnia series? We listened to them (audio drama by Focus on the Family) before reading them. FANTASTIC.
One that we downloaded 2 years ago for a VERY long road trip (I think it was 85+ hours in the car) was the unabridged "Indian and the Cupboard" from Audible.com = 4+ hours of brainy entertainment. Mr. Intensity has listened to it over and over and over again.
Another source that we're just beginning to purchase from is lamplighterpublishing.com GREAT books for boys.
The Tree House collection books sound like such fun! We've listened to Lion King and Stellaluna on audio, mostly in the car. My son loves it. What a fun idea!
