Early Chapter Books for Kids

Do you read every book your kids read? I do not. After all, I have my own books to read! For the most part Kiddo chooses his own library books, but as a obsessed dedicated book hound I search out independent reading books for him, getting many of my recommendations from the book blogs and book lists I read.  Today I share some of the early chapter books Kiddo has enjoyed along with his own reviews. While his reviews may not be the most informative, you can always read more thorough descriptions and reviews at Amazon. My notes are in italics.

Clementine. I like Clementine. She cuts her hair for her friend. This is a clever series. I read the first book on the subway for lack of other reading material in my bag and laughed out loud several times. You can do that on the NYC subway and no one will think you are crazy.

A Mouse Called Wolf. The mouse sings and helps people. I love this book. King-Smith is the author of the well-known Babe: The Gallant Pig, but has written loads of age appropriate and thoughtful early chapter books. I encourage you to search out his books either for read alouds or independent reading.

The One and Only Stuey Lewis. Stuey is so funny. I never want to take this book back to the library. I haven't looked at this one but it received a lot of good press from the pros. Book 2 comes out soon.

Fractions = Trouble! This book has math in it, so it's good. Claudia Mills has written a bajillion chapter books.

The No 1 Car Spotter. The boy likes to watch cars and everyone has a strange nickname. This is by the author of the highly lauded Anna Hibiscus series, another superb chapter book, which we read aloud. Both series are set in modern Africa, and  received great reviews. Book 2 is on its way.

Marty McGuire. There is a show in here. I like it. If you're interested in moderating your child's princess phase, this is a good one. Be sure to read E. R. Bird's review at Amazon. Again: Book 2 coming soon!

Needless to say, Kiddo has read hundreds of other books, so I will certainly post more in the future, but these should get you started! Got any more early chapter books to recommend? Leave a comment and tell us.

I'll be linking to What My Child Is Reading and Book Sharing Monday.

  2. Great book choices and reviews, Kiddo! I'm adding The One and Only Stuey Lewis to our library list.

My girls enjoyed the Daisy Dawson series (Steve Voake), Welcome to the Bed and Biscuit (Joan Davenport Carris) and its sequels, Lady Lollipop by Dick King-Smith, and the Gooney Bird Greene books by Lois Lowry.

  3. Thanks for the list. We are always looking for good early chapter books.

We really loved A Toad for Tuesday by Russell Erickson. My son is always working his way through the Moongobble series by Bruce Coville.

  6. You're better than a librarian, and I like how you mix covers with descriptions.

Sorry to confess this, but I do choose books by their covers. I expect a certain tone from the type of illustration used.

The kids and I really enjoy books from the Houndsley and Catina series and the Pinky and Rex series both by James Howe.
